Did you hear?…Probably Not

Posted by AB on March 19, 2009

Despite a rash of injuries, United States baseball has advanced to the semi-finals of the World Baseball Classic (WBC).  They will face either Japan or Korea on Sunday, March 22, in Los Angeles.

I cannot tell if anybody, even baseball junkies, is paying attention to the “other tournament.”  Today marks the beginning of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, and its enormous presence has really muted any talk about the baseball classic.  The NCAA Tournament dominates not only the headlines, but also the minds of the talking sports heads on television and radio.  It’s not surprising, but disappointing, at least, because sports fans are missing something that would make them proud:  professional athletes playing passionately for the honor of  their country.

I don’t know if we (USA) can win the whole thing, but we have already improved upon the 2006 eighth place finish.  The other nations involved are far more supportive of their countrymen than we have been of ours.  I’m not saying make it the central focus of the sports world; I am simply saying to recognize the tournament and what it means to the country that invented baseball.

No matter what you do, have a great weekend.  And if you are a sports fan, enjoy one of the great weeks in American sports.  I know I will–as long as my team wins.
