It’s that time of the year, sports fans–some might say that it’s the best time of the year.  This is a time in which everyone can feel like an expert, at least until Thursday.  That’s right–it’s time to fill in your brackets for the NCAA basketball tournament.

Whether you are a college basketball fanatic or someone who has yet to watch a game this year, you can be a part of the madness.  What makes the NCAA basketball tournament so unique is the fact that you don’t have to be an expert.  It’s a mass inclusion event, much like the Super Bowl.  Everyone watches the Super Bowl, even those who could care less about football.

Many people will enter an office pool, while many others will fill out their brackets just for the hell of it.  Everyone has a method, a philosophy to pick the winners.  I, for instance, try to be pragmatic–looking at each matchup in depth.  Someone else may pick the highest seeds each round.  Others might pick the teams with best nicknames, or because they have cool mascots.  They funny thing is that all of those methodologies have about the same chance of being successful.  Like picking stocks, a blind monkey can do as well as an expert on many occasions.

However you view it, just enjoy.  The next few weeks are, in my opinion, some of the best of the year.  Fill out your brackets and cross your fingers.  Good luck.

For anyone interested, here are my picks to reach the final four:

  • North Carolina
  • Michigan State
  • Villanova
  • Connecticut

Championship Game:  North Carolina beats Michigan State

*It must be said that I am a biased a Tar Heel fan
